Over the years I’ve been very lucky to see Interpol a few times. They are a reliably great live band. No real surprises in their shows or even spontaneity. But an effortless style and grace. A swirl of guitars and pounding rhythms. This show was actually a double bill with their contemporaries in Bloc Party. Bloc Party opened and even though I’ve dropped off their music over the years their set was quite good.
But it was Interpol I was really excited to see. From the opening bars of ‘Untitled’ they had a sold out crowd in raptures. It was a really well paced set with a good selection across their now extensive catalogue. Lots of old and new. ‘Toni’ was one new song I was excited to hear and it was great. But it was classics like ‘Evil’ and ‘Obstacle 1’ that received the biggest response. The band were in fine form. Lead man Paul Banks is just irrepressible cool and the rhythm section was just a pounding joy. A great night from a band that always delivers.
