Liars @ Sydney Carriageworks

The first time I saw Liars I wasn't terribly impressed. Their harsh angular sounds were almost antagonistic to the audience. Discordant and confronting. But I continued to invest in their music, with handsome rewards. Fast forward to 2014 and the Los Angeles based band were now a complete live act. Their sound has graduated to a pounding fan friendly slew of delight. They are still original, still daring, still confronting. But the ride is thrilling and exciting. Friday night they were here for Vivid and playing in the great setting of the Carriageworks. The set was mostly made up tracks from their newly released (and killer) album in "Mess". With visuals matching the music it was a short but sweet set of grinding, pumping goodness. Aaron Hemphill provides the bedrock of sound of synth and guitar. Julian Gross absolutely beasts the drums. Then there is lead man and singer Angus Andrew. Wearing a mask for the first two songs the transplanted Australian is slightly unhinged and seemingly a little mad. But the attacks the material with a fervent ferocity. It all adds up to potent mix. Long may you care to dare Liars.

'Five hundred peaced up people
I don't care what they write
I want no courtship in their plight
They say I'm not a teacher
I know the reasons why
I can explain another time'
